At some point in time, we’re all going to deal with the loss of someone we love. Death, unfortunately, is a reality of life and it hurts. It’s possible that you’ve received an unfavorable diagnosis from a doctor, or that you’re struggling to move forward following the loss of a family member or loved one.

She just stared off into space as she realized that her second husband was now gone. 21 years earlier, after 18 years of marriage, her first husband lost his life due to complications from a medical procedure. She and her young daughter laid him to rest, and over time began to reconnect with life. They picked up the pieces and moved forward.

Then she met her second husband. He was like a breath of fresh air in her life. Over time they fell in love and married, and life was grand. Fast forward to today. His cold just wouldn’t get better and he ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. Things progressed to the point of him being in a coma, and, once again, complications took his life.

The emptiness and fear and bitterness overwhelmed her.

Death does that to those left to mourn. Few people understand the pain, the loneliness, and the frustration you feel. They’re smiling while you’re crying.

But God understands our grief. The Bible explains that the pain of death is caused by a world full of sin. It goes on to tell us that God loves us so much that He created a way to overcome death…….and it came through His one and only Son, Jesus.

Jesus’ own death paid the price of our sin once and for all. And three days after His burial He broke the curse of death by rising from the dead. Because He rose from the dead, we have hope for new life: now and forever.

Death is a reality and nothing will ever change that. But, death doesn’t have to overpower us. When we’re dealing with loss and death, we can begin to breathe again and live again because of our relationship with Jesus.

It begins with a prayer:

“Dear Jesus, please help me find my way forward again. The grief I feel has hurt me so much! I need to find new life in you. At this moment I am putting my faith in you and in your sacrifice for me. Please forgive me for the wrong things I’ve done in my life. I choose to follow you. Thank you for breaking the power of death over my life. Help me to find hope and joy again. In your name I pray. Amen!”
