We want to be strong and in control. We want others to see our determination to make it in this world. But frequently, fear keeps us from moving forward. Maybe that fear comes from a bad experience, or maybe it simply shows up one day for no apparent reason. Mark Twain said, “Courage isn’t the lack of fear, it is acting in spite of it.” Sometimes we need more than a great quote to calm the fears.
Fears come in all shapes and sizes. What causes fear for you may seem like nothing to someone else, but whatever your fears may be, they can stop you in your tracks. And when fear does attack, its common to feel alone because no one could possibly understand how powerful your fears are. You might even be embarrassed and begin to withdraw.
Fear is a powerful force, so we need a powerful ally to overcome it. The good news is that you don’t have to face your fears alone. There is someone who can help you overcome your fear. His name is Jesus Christ, God’s Son. He came into the world to bring freedom from the things that hurt us – including fears that often hold us in our own little prison.
Jesus understands our fears, and he provided a solution, his friendship. When we trust in Jesus Christ and invite him into our life, he begins to guide us and helps us to overcome fear by allowing us to experience his perfect love. No only that, but he promises to always be with us. 1 John 4:18 from the New Testament tells us: “No fear exists where his love is. Rather, perfect love gets rid of fear, because fear involves punishment. The person who lives in fear doesn’t have perfect love.” (God’s Word Translation)
Because Jesus loves us, we can defeat the fears in our lives. Your fears are real, but they don’t need to control your life. You can take back that control by allowing Jesus Christ to help you.
It begins with a simple prayer like this:
“Dear Jesus, I am trusting in you today. I invite you into my life and ask you to forgive me for the wrong things I have done. I need your help to overcome fear’s hold on my life. Let your perfect love remove my fears! I choose to live for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
